A Good Cut

Sometimes a good haircut is all you need!  I’m not one to get a haircut every six weeks as most, more like every four to six months.  Having long straight hair when I was young, I’ve always been one to trim things up on my own.  For the most part I can mimic and maintain the hair style, yet there comes a point where I need a professional cut.

Unfortunately my experience with hairdressers has been interesting.  I was spoiled with a fabulous one in my early twenties, but after she moved, the choices became limited.  Not all hairdressers listen when you share what you are looking for.  I’ve encountered those who cut my hair extremely short or take out a razor when I told them that it was not my choice in how to have my hair cut.  Although there are many excellent hairdressers, I had a hard time finding one that worked well with my type of hair with the skill in listening and cutting it the way I wanted.

Today I returned to a hairdresser that had cut my hair last summer.  That was the first time, since my early twenties, where when I returned home there was no need for me to trim up leftover stragglers. I could wear it straight, style it or curl it up for fun.  She had previously done my daughter’s hair for prom, then later a funky cut.  Even then I liked how she worked and listened to my daughter’s wants, producing a look that made her smile and feel beautiful.

I knew that as I walked in today, my hair was well groomed yet frumpy, needing some TLC.  After she washed and did the basic cut, before she added the final touches, she had me check the work she had done with the layers I had requested.  My hair was then dried, and as she worked I was turned from the mirror so she could style it up.  As she finished and turned me back to face the mirror, what transpired is what I like best in a good cut.  A smile quickly formed across my face.

Today I felt beautiful as I left with my hair cut and styled, although with more curls than I normally would wear, I felt refreshed.  As I returned home, feeling good about the investment that I made, I received the ultimate confirmation of my decision as my daughter and husband both smiled while sharing how much they liked the look.  Sometimes a good cut is exactly what one needs to improve one’s frumpy look.  Then there are times when treating yourself to something you don’t frequently do, is worth the expense and time, as it improves your outlook in life.

Beauty is not about a good haircut, and although it can make you feel great, your attitude and love for others brings out the true beauty of what lives within you.
