Changing the Heart of Commercialism

  • Kohls 2013 Christmas

The tears welled up and fell down my cheek as I watched this years Kohl’s 2013 Christmas Commercial.  Although I am certain that the products that were used to decorate were items one could find in their store, the main purpose was not the typical commercialism we are so used to viewing.

Christmas is not about how much we buy to put a smile on another person’s face, but more about the heart of what we put into our gifts.  Whether purchased or made, do we give from within what we really want to share?

This Christmas commercial shared how a couple, living across the hall from an elderly women, went in and decorated her home with much cheer.  As you watch, no credit of the act was done, but what one could see is the warmth that warmed up this older woman’s heart as she returned home.

How often do we do for others without the expectation of something in return?  When was the last time you thought of someone outside your own family and network of friends, where your heart opened enough to give a little of yourself, while giving hope to another?  Do you only do this at Christmas, or is your love shared throughout the year?

Following are the lyrics of Don Dylan’s song Forever Young.  I hope you take the time to read each word.  Enjoy!!

“Forever Young”

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your heart be filled with love, may your spirit of love for others be felt, and may you be blessed in ways you least expect, because you gave from your heart.

May God bless you,

Laura
