“Find the person who will love you because of your differences and not in spite of them and you have found a lover for life.” – Leo Buscaglia
One of my favorite authors and inspirational speakers is Leo Buscalgia. He sought to inspire people to love while encouraging one to live a life with meaning and purpose. Anytime I encounter one of his quotes, it makes me appreciate all the more where I have been and who I have become.
There are days in which I think about the different paths that I have traveled and sometimes think about the “what ifs” had I chosen a different course. There are certainly some choices I wish I could return back in time to change, but life was not designed to be rewound and played over again.
Leo Buscaglia was focused on teaching people that love is a skill that can be learned, just as one learns to walk and talk. One would not think you would have to “learn” to love, yet within our culture there are many encounters that teach quite the opposite, leaving one with bitterness, pain, and distrust. Yet, in the reality of life, love needs to be learned and experienced in order for it to spread.
We are all aware of the love that bonds a couple through many years of marriage, a friendship that lasts beyond a few, and parental love for one’s child. The love that I appreciate most is exactly what Leo Buscaglia speaks of. The tenderness of a touch, which can be felt when one puts their hand on another’s shoulder in a gentle and caring fashion. A kind word when spoken with gentleness. A listening ear that hears the heart behind the words. An honest compliment that can turn a frown into a lasting smile. Yet, any act of caring, that shows a heart of love for others, has the opportunity to change the world.
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” ~ Leo Buscaglia ~
